Meeting Minutes 1/9/2013

The MVG steering committee met 1/9/13 at Paula C. and Eric’s place. Kim, Drew, Konstantin, Stephan, Paula C., Eric, Sue, and Nico attended. (Thanks everyone.)

This is what we discussed:

  • We will be meeting up at MVG this Sunday (1/13) at noon to do things. You should join us. Activities will include:
    • Shed-building. (Eric and Stephan and whoever wants to swing a hammer.)
    • Sign-painting of composting rules. (Kim)
    • Distribution of surveys to MVG members and non-members. (Konstantin)
    • Arugula-picking from the dirt piles. (everyone)
    • Hobo trashcan fire (everyone.)
  • Groundswell Mural update.
    • Richard from Groundswell is trying to contact the landlord, who is apparently a fairly hands-off property management company. Cross your fingers!
    • Drew from PACC wanted to make sure that MVG and Groundswell understand that, as per the license agreement, the site may be developed over the mural someday. Those in attendance agreed that a mural that lasts a couple of years (at least!) is better than none at all. Also, if Groundswell fails to contact the owner of the wall, PACC might be available to help.
  • Christmas trees on the MVG site. Does anyone know where they came from? Vandra has a wood-chipper. We might make some mulch… TBD.
  • The IOBY money. We need to resolve access to the IOBY money.
  • The next meeting. We will meet in two weeks, 1/22. On the agenda now are survey results (be sure to fill it out when you get it!) and next steps for site planning for the spring.

MYRTLE VILLAGE GREEN BI-WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – Nov. 14th

Here are some updates for November:

GreenThumb / NYC Department of Parks & Recreation

We’re in: Being a member of GreenThumb allows us to get access to resources ranging from free mulch/woodchips to workshops.

We also have to follow some guidelines and keep the garden tidy but this will help keep the bar high for MVG.

Groundswell Mural Approved:

Groundswell will work with teens as a summer job program to paint a mural on one of the walls in the MVG space. For over 16 years, Groundswell has been transforming neighborhoods with dynamic public art that delights, inspires, and invigorates thousands of New Yorkers everyday. They forster strong collaborations among underserved youth, professional artists, and community organizations.  Each mural team is comprised of two professional artists and 12–15 youth artists who work for seven weeks to research, design and execute a mural.
The project budget of $40,000 would be fully funded by Groundswell and the Department of Environmental Protection and includes supplies, equipment, scaffolding, liability insurance, artist fees, youth stipends, and project management.

Check out their website: www.groundswellmural.org

We Want to hear from you:

We are preparing a series of surveys to send out members and general community for people to weigh in on what kinds of future uses to accommodate for in the design. Planter boxes, etc.

Long term planning process:

Even though its fairly quiet in the lot, we are creafting the long term planning process and design as one of our winter goals. This way when spring is near we will have all things in order and begin work.

Soil Testing:

We will test the soil from various parts of the lot to get a sense of the toxins present therein, even though most of the non paved parts of the lot will be covered in wood chips.

New MVG sign:

After Sandy our banner got pretty tattered. We will install a new sign on the fence.

A Shed in the works:

One of our next work projects will be to build a shed to keep tools and other essentials out of the elements in the winter.

Check out our composing guide with hours and what material is suitable for the compost.
